Product Information
Vitamin D takes a special position among the vitamins. Unlike other vitamins, vitamin D can be produced from precursors that already exist in the body. The body’s own production is triggered by sunshine on the skin (UVB light exposure) and makes a much bigger contribution to the human body’s supply with this vitamin compared to vitamin D intake than dietary intake. Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphate metabolism, thereby promoting hardening of the bone. Additionally, vitamin D is involved in other metabolic processes of the body and also has an effect on muscle strength. Vitamin D also contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
In contrast to the body’s own production of vitamin D, vitamin D intake from food only plays a relatively small part in the vitamin D supply. The focus is on the body’s own production of vitamin D and therefore the recommendation to produce and store vitamin D through exposure of the skin to sunlight. The body’s own production varies from person to person and is dependent on other factors such as latitude and season. It is recommended to expose yourself to the sun for a total of approx. 5 to 25 minutes per day with your face, hands and larger parts of your arms and legs uncovered. Taking vitamin D supplements is only recommended if it is not possible to achieve a targeted improvement in the supply, particularly in at-risk groups, either through diet or the body’s own vitamin D production through sun exposure.1
